New algorithms are a breakthrough for cyber security
29/07/2022
Researchers have now discovered a new quantum computing method that will allow for safer and more secure connections.
The new breakthrough has been endorsed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) who have given their official approval for cryptographic technology that is said to be more resistant to quantum computer attacks.
The breakthrough includes an algorithm used to keep data safe and secure. These algorithms are called CRYSTALS-Kyber that work alongside three more algorithms that are used for digital signatures and provide identity authentication. These algorithms rely on tried-and-tested mathematical techniques.
One of the biggest threats to quantum computing is the ‘quantum apocalypse’, the idea that quantum computers will eventually become a reality and render most methods of internet encryption useless. The UK is aiming to secure 50% of the global quantum computing market by 2040 by investing in the National Quantum Computing Centre in Oxfordshire. The rate in which the UK is investing in quantum computing calls for more need to protect systems and encrypt files more securely.
Secure files are currently encrypted so that only keyholders have the ‘keys’ to unlock the files/messages. Hackers are currently still able to hold onto those messages, even if their contents currently remain impossible to read. Hackers can keep hold of these messages until the security is weakened through finding bugs in the system that are used to encrypt them or by waiting for the “quantum apocalypse”.
This breakthrough will help stop this from becoming a reality. Researchers are constantly finding new and improved ways to lock files and keep them safe from hackers. However, despite this, the threat of cyber-attacks is always present, making it of upmost importance that businesses do their very best to implement measures against cyber-attacks.
